Advocate

Political Conference

We take a holistic approach to ending gun violence, centering our advocacy around addressing access to guns, the root causes of violence, and improving the safety and well-being of young people as foundational to violence prevention. Read below to see what we are prioritizing during the 2025-2026 session and information about the omnibus gun safety law that we successfully advocated for: An Act to Modernize Firearm Laws.

We are thrilled to announce that Governor Healey signed H.4885, An Act Modernizing Firearm Laws into law on July 25th, 2024. The Coalition has been working on this bill for nearly two years, and we are very excited to see it become law. Please see below for an overview of this lifesaving new law.

Juvenile Justice

Juvenile justice reform

Involvement with the criminal and juvenile justice system fuels the conditions that lead to gun violence: poverty, lack of opportunity, and trauma. We are focused on legislation that keeps youth out of the juvenile justice system and provides more supportive services to those that are involved in the juvenile justice system. We are working closely with our partners at Citizens for Juvenile Justice who are the lead advocates for this bill.

  • S.1061 / H.1923 An Act to promote public safety and better outcomes for youth

    • Sponsors: Sen. Creem, Sen. Crighton, Sen. Miranda; Rep. O’Day, Rep. Cruz

    • Raises the age at which a young person is considered an adult in the eyes of the justice system. This bill would keep 18-20 year olds in the juvenile justice system instead of the adult justice system, where they receive more developmentally appropriate and supportive services.

Industry Accountability

Industry accountabiity

  • S.1653 / H.2672 An Act relative to firearm industry accountability and gun violence victims’ access to justice

    • Sponsors: Sen. Creem; Rep. Moran

    • Would allow individuals and entities harmed by firearm industry members’ wrongful and unlawful conduct the option to pursue civil actions seeking appropriate justice, fair compensation, and other remedies for those harms in court.

Unsolved homicides

Unsolved homicides

  • S.2177 / HD.1754 An Act relative to unsolved homicides

    • Sponsors: Sen. Miranda; Rep. Holmes, Rep. Williams

    • Establishes an office of unsolved homicides within the Attorney General’s office. This bill would allow immediate family members of Massachusetts homicide victims, whose cases have been unsolved for over three years, to request the unsolved homicides office to review the case and see if further investigation could result in new leads or identify a possible suspect.
